My daughter only uses her paci for bedtime and naps, but I see babies and kids with pacis all the time! It really frustrates me when I see a toddler trying to talk while a paci is hanging from his/her mouth. Obviously, it's not there to soothe them!

What are your thoughts on pacifiers? Do you use them? Under what circumstances?

the funny thing is, that all my friends who got pregnant were totally anti pacis...And after the baby was born, all of the babies are using pacis....lool I think it's easier to wean a baby off a pacifier but it's harder to wean him/her off the thumb, because you can;t just take it away ...:)

I think it's because we have all seen that kid that just seems way to old for a paci. I'm just hoping that Ijah doesn't need that comfort of sucking all of the time. Hes a pretty comfortable little guy already so I'm thinking he will self regulate pretty well.

This is becoming my fear! (that I can't take her thumb away...) I don't want my kid to be the 3 year old at daycare with a paci or sucking her thumb.

awww..that's a cute picture! My niece never wanted the paci and she didn't suck her thumb either .Every baby is different. Look at it that way, he doesn't want the paci so you won't have to wean him off of anything...better for you...

My son never took to it. I tried several different ones including soothies and he would spit them out. He's 6 months now and rarely takes one unless its from the freezer to sooth his teething for a minute or so. For this he usually takes his teething ring. Not sure if he'll be a thumb sucker no signs of it yet but he could be a late bloomer. He loves sucking on his toes. I'm not worried about that though. Can you imagine? All the kids playing on the playground and there's Zeus in the corner sucking his toes. I've seen stranger things. I try not to give him the same thing over and over like the same blanket or bottle or toy so he doesn't get fixated on that particular thing. He's not partial he sticks anything and everything in his mouth. Maybe a paci would be such a bad idea.

I wish (sort of) that I could get my son to use a paci. At three months he's started sucking his thumb and I agree with the sentiment that it's easier to take away the binkie than the thumb...

Anyone have any suggestions? (Besides try another style, we're on style #5 now.)

Before I had my son until he was about two months i was anti-paci. When he was about two months he became really fussy right before his naps and bedtime, i tried everything to soothe him rocking, cuddling, singing, warm bath, i even tried gas drops, nothing worked. Finally I found the pacifier that was in one of the gift baskets from my baby shower and gave it to him. From then on i have had no problems putting him to sleep. Any other time i try to give him the paci he refuses. Recently he has began dropping the paci to suck his thumb, I don't like the idea of him sucking his thumb. Only because my mom gave me my finger to stop me from sucking a pacifier and to this day i catch myself about to suck my finger.

NOW i think there is nothing wrong with a child having a pacifier. It really helped me out alot!!
BUT I totally disagree with finger sucking!!!
