Anyone in your life refuse to give your child age-appropriate toys? My mother is routinely giving my 1-year old 3+ toys. The problem is, some toys are suggested for 3+ due to development and some are due to safety reasons. I'm tired of trying to figure out which. What are some of your problems?

Maybe you could try going shopping with your mom. This helped with my mil. I told her which toys were appropriate and was able to give her reasons on the spot for why a toy wasn't. For her it was more about being able to buy stuff for her grandbaby than what she was buying in particular. She still comes over with some annoying battery powered crap but at least it's now age appropriate crap which is all i can ask for i guess.

I worry that this may become an issue for us. I tend to ask for books for my son . Then if they are too advanced, I just save them for the future. Last Christmas most of the toys we received were not age appropriate, but then my son was only 3 months old, so there wasn't much to get him at the time. I put away most of the "older" toys and have slowly been bringing them out as he is capable of using them. Good luck!

Just stuff 'em in the closet...

Unfortunately, our house is pretty well stuffed to the rafters as is.

Thanks, bethany, for the idea to go shopping with them, although my mom lives a couple of hours away and I'm mad at her right now. But someday I'll take her shopping. I think part of it, too, is I feel like she's commenting on my parenting when she brings him things she thinks he could be doing. It's a weird dynamic right now . . .
