Recently, I took my son to an opthamologtist because he has nystagmus, shaking of his eyes, while now I am bi-polar and taking prozac and was instructed to keep taqking my prozac throughout my pregnancy. When the opthamologist asked if I was on any medications when I was pregnant with my son he seemed completely flabbergasted to find out that I had been taking my prozac while pregnant, especially in my first trimster. We've had an MRI done, waiting to see pedicatric endocronologist.. I am wondering if my taking of prozac could have caused his disorder. Can anyone help me?

A quick survey through available literature showed no such link. Taking flouxtine throughout pregnancy MAY be linked to 1 to 2% increased risk of "minor birth defects". Minor birth defects are problems that do not requires surgical correction.

There may be an increased risk of pulmonary hypertension in babies exposed to Prozac throughout pregnancy.

None of these risks seems to be connected to nystagmus.

There are identified risks to the baby from depression. It is clearly bad for babies to be exposed to high levels of stress hormones throughout pregnancy. While Prozac wouldn't be my very first choice of an SSRI to take while pregnant, it is a reasonable choice.

Ask your pediatric endocrinologist this question- but I didn't find ANY studies linking Prozac during pregnancy to this kind of disorder.
