I plan on watching my nephew when they are born as my Sister-in-law is planning on going back to work. She'll need day care and I am already a stay at home mom. I love the idea of my son growing up with his cousin so am happy doing it. My question is what to charge. She knows it is work and would have to pay for day care anywhere, but would rather give me that supplemental income as well as have her child watched by family so it isn't a problem of asking for money, I just have no idea what to ask for. Having never paid for childcare I have nothing to compare to...

We live in Minneapolis, MN and I know child care prices are high here...

Any ideas? How do we come up with something equitable?

(luckily I still have a few months to figure it out)

Anyone?

I think a cheap daycare here in CA is about $125 per week. But I think that is more or less for something is only 3-4 hours and not all day.

I really don't know what is appropriate to ask for. I've always had a nanny.

Not always.

The screening process and the probationary period is a pain. Your kids get attached to a nanny (because they see her everyday) and then you find out she's stealing. Or they do dumb stuff like run the bath and leave the kid just sitting in the tub (see my other post).

At least with a daycare facility, there is structure.
And with family (as in your case) you can really trust them with your child.

A nanny works for me because I have my own business. So I pretty much can have a nanny whenever I need it, versus business hours or at the convenience of family (that I really wouldn't leave my kids with).

Like right now, I'm at home. I'll probably go to my office in the next hour. My daughter, Slater (just turned 3) is napping. I can leave her with the nanny, go to the office for a meeting, and be back to pick her up (she'll be awake by then) so I can take her to this play group she's in.

You can't just go in and out of a daycare facility when you want.

Plus, I have 6 kids in total. They all have activities. You should see my Blackberry. Sometimes I physically can't be on one side of town to pick up one kid, and feed another that just got home on the other side of town.

So your SIL is lucky to have you. She'll know her son will be well cared for (I don't even think they pick your baby up when it cries). Especially since you're a SAHM (I'm a firm believer that SAHMs make the best PB&J sandwiches for after school, lol).
