Are you seprarated, divorced, widowed, never married? I am adding this group to Babble because I'm surprised that there isn't one yet! This is a forum to come together to discuss anything and everything about life as a single parent.

I'm a single parent and this group is a godsend. I love my son and want him to have a full life and sometimes I get a little worried about that being a single parent. Also, this is a bit off topic but I think my son has a yeast infection. He's ver...

Profile Information

About My Family
I am a single mom, but her dad and I remain commited to raising her together as best as we can without letting our issues get in the way. We currently live in Miami, Florida... we hope to move away soon.
What are your children's names and birth dates?
Eva is 2 and a half. (March 22, 2006- the most painful day of my life)
Are you considering having more?
Not at this time. Perhaps in the future, and definitely after she starts Pre-K or Kindergarden and we don't have to pay for her pre-school anymore!
How would you describe your parenting philosophy?
I pick and choose my battles. I give her minimal choices such as picking between two different pairs of shoes, which pyjamas she wants to wear, etc., I try not to flip out on her whenever she has a tanturm.
What's your favorite parenting book (if any)?
I don't read books on parenting... she showed up at her preschool with an allure magazine under her arm the other day- need I say more?
What are your family’s favorite books and toys?
Toys: She just got her first Barbie... she loves anything girly.. Tinkerbell, Belle, Sleeping Beauty...
Books: not so much-- she has a few that she looks at, but she's into movies-- I know... that makes me a horrible mother, right?
What are your family’s favorite TV shows or movies?
Mom: The Hills, Rachel Zoe's show, First 48, Dog Whisperer
Eva: Disney Movies, The Wiggles
What are your family's favorite foods?
So many... I love to cook (hate the cleaning afterwards, but I try not to think about that when I put my chef hat on). We love chicken, fish, shrimp, salads, pasta and of course a nice steak every once in a while. I like to eat home cooked (via food network recipes) meals. Our daughter Eva cannot have enough rice-- she's cuban/puerto rican, so I guess that's where that comes from.
What are your family's favorite places to hang out?
Home, friend's houses, out of town, parks, malls, lincold road (miami beach)-- there aren't very many family-friendly activities in Miami, hence us wanting to skip town-- and if there are and we don't know about them, please let me know. There is only so much beach time you can do in one year!
What one adjective would you choose to describe your household?
Fun, laid-back, exciting, loving
What do you see your kids doing when they grow up?
Fashonista- but whatever she wants to do-- she will have my support (I know what it's like not having any)
Describe your most humbling parenting moment.
Lately it's having my daughter demand to listen to Justin (Timberlake) or Rihanna in the car. She's 2!
Who are you looking to meet on The Playground?
Other parents who could relate to the joys and stresses of toddler parenting!

Hey Milena!

You profile says you're in Miami. I'm in L.A but I work in the fashion and apparel industry. There is a niche market in Miami, and I think you should definitely attempt to take the jump to follow your dreams.

I'm thinking finances may prevent you from really taking a full jump, but you can't let that always stop you. Design a small collection, make the samples, take them to the Miami Mart, get a showroom rep. If you're garments are good, you'll get a buyer. Don't go with a net-30 (that way you'll have funds up front), find a manufacturer (being that you're in Miami, the carribean is closer and cheaper than manufacturing there in Miami). Even if funds are supper tight, do a CMT order. Have your goods delivered on time, and do it all over again. It might be a while before you make a decent profit since you'd start small, but you can still do this while keeping your current job...and your baby-girl can be the best fit model!

-OR-

you can make a collection (you always keep a sample) and sell them on cosignment to moderate to high end kids boutiques...you'll get you creative fulfilment there....and you'll build great relationships with retailers...which is like gold in the industry.

I got laid off today.........

This is crazy to say, but-- I didn't see it coming. I knew that they were going to cut a few people, but no where in my pretty little head did "maybe I'm one of those few" come up. I'm still in a bit of shock. It's not something that I expected while I was putting my head down to sleep last night, this morning as I was getting dressed, nor while I was having breakfast in the Cafe at work, or while I offered my boss (director of administration) half my egg sandwich. I knew he was having a rough m… Continue
