Do Home Businesses Go Well With Children?

How can you combine child-rearing with running a small business at home?

Is it even a good idea to do this? I think the right answer is "It depends....."

It depends on a lot of things. (1) It depends on how central your home business is to your basic family needs. (2) It depends on what kind of social network you have in place around your family. (3)It depends on the age and number of your children, and of course, (4) it depends on the kind of home business you are attempting.

Profile Information

About My Family
My family is grown, but I was an early homeschooler and I taught art in my studio some years ago.

What are your children's names and birth dates?
I don't make a practice of publishing that kind of information.
Are you considering having more?
I am past child-bearing age
How would you describe your parenting philosophy?
A mix of toughness and looseness. I faced a lot of obstacles as a single parent who chose to leave a restrictive religious background. I believe in basing all rules on priorities of risk and giving the child as much information as they can comprehend and allowing them to make choices and learn how to handle the consequences.
What's your favorite parenting book (if any)?
Not sure, because I read so many. Probably Dr. Spock along with Piaget and other authors.
What are your family’s favorite books and toys?
My child's favorite first book as a toddler was "Richard Scarry Books!" She loved those so much that she would ask by the author's name instead of the title.
What are your family’s favorite TV shows or movies?
We had limited television. She watched Sesame Street and similar when visiting grandparents. When she was older, we enjoyed Rosanne Barr together. Seems it made it easier for her to tell me what she thought of my own parenting skills, *LOL*
What are your family's favorite foods?
Traditional American leaning towards the brown-rice macrobiotic style. Meat & cheese probably about a third of the American average. Early childhood avoided white sugar and kept to low dairy. Never served carbonated beverages.
What are your family's favorite places to hang out?
Woodlands for relaxation, museums and cafes when in cities.
What one adjective would you choose to describe your household?
bohemian chaos.
What do you see your kids doing when they grow up?
I have the luxury of seeing already: she is in alternative healing.
Describe your most humbling parenting moment.
When she was a teenager, while leaving our apartment with one of her friends, she answered a question about who my boyfriend was with "Oh, that's ma's latest addition to her 'loser' collection."
Who are you looking to meet on The Playground?
Craig Ferguson.

Time to get creative. Look at the mountain community you are in. Other women might be in similar circumstances, how do they survive? Some survive by caving in to the guy: avoid those. Some hold family relations in spite of the guy: get to know those…

*LOL*..... reminds me of a story that was in the news a couple years ago about a small child in England who bought mommy a new red sportscar.... Seems she had been in the habit of letting the child hit the "buy now" button on toys when they looked…

I think you should get help in spite of the risk of "labeling". There are many different issues that can feed this kind of problem: the teen's own emotional triggers, the repetitious pain-relief cycle that can become an addiction in itself, etc. Go…

I think that another way to do it might be to ask one of your trusted friends to do it. This whole subject brings up a funny memory: I had been working as a reporter before I was pregnant, and my husband and I had different sets of friends outside o…

Thank you, Zicea. It's always good to see how people do things along with their size, level, and style of busniess/family. I think the important thing, regarding children and "help", is that children are aware of the nature of their parents' work an…

I work from home and my business establishment. The kids know when Mommy is working and when mommy isn't. So they know how to behave. I suppose the key to having a million things happen in your business and having 6 kids (ages 13-3) is organization.…

Then it's not a home business, is it?
