If you live in an apartment, have kids, and your apartment is not some attic loft with windows only in the ceiling, then you too have nightmares about your kid/s falling to thier deaths from your bedroom window, innocently cracked open to let in a breeze. N actually had a real honest to goodness nightmare where Felek plunged from our window and N tried to ctach him, missing by fractions of an inch. Terrible, horrible threat- these damn windows, but boarding them up is a very poor option so we're…

After working in the wardrobe department in the film industry for over twelve years, I know a thing or two about fashion. One of my many jobs involved the demanding and hectic process of buying the perfect outfit for the top celebrities.
When I say perfect, I mean perfect—that authentic…

The recent warm weather and burst of spring showers had prompted my son into a desire for puddle jumping. Of course, the rubber boots he donned last year were far from fitting onto his now three-year-old toes, so off to the store we went to get a new pair.
Not thinking and tryin…

Studying costumes and costume design was one of my favorite things in school. For whatever reason, I loved the ornate and overly detailed fabrics of the years gone by. I was particularly enthralled with the 17th century, the French court and all that was Renaissance.

Before I had kids, I often sat with my arms-crossed and face-scowled when kids, in any environment, gleefully ran around me, shouting at the top of their lungs. I had this permanent look of non-amusement at any event that was all about kids. I would refuse to sit beside little ones…

Polish - which is what you have to speak when you live here - is an overly complex language that is very resistant to upgrades and simplifications though it has, like all things old world, it's many charms. One of the drags of speaking Polish is that you have to conjugate verbs AND nouns according to gender, which is particularly tough to master for young speakers like Felek. He is constantly getting mixed up and refering to himself doing something as though he were a girl. Though we know this i…

I haven't a spare second these days for blogging what with trying to prepare for Flora's arrival (end of august) and finish all the projects I won't have time for when she does. Our son Felek, however, as he gets more and more talkative, keeps writing blog posts in my head! But since my fancy cell phone died (of a virus that kept me connected to the internet even when travelinning abroad which racked up a phone bill of 5000 bucks for my company, no less) I can no longer update my moblog, so I've…

First, it was the pregnancy and fears about hurting the baby. Then, the birth of your baby and the sleep deprivation induced by mid-nightly feeding and diaper-changing sessions, was enough to obliterate any thoughts of sex from your and your wife’s minds.
Now with the baby growing up and bed-time schedules returning to normal, if you still find your amorous advances getting the cold response, here’s a little perspective from the mom’s side on what it will take to get some of your sex life back:…

Dear Michael:
You are 16 months old now and life for me has changed so much. You are the child I have always longed for, the fulfillment of my life’s desire. That’s a lot to put on one little person, but I’m trying to let you be your own little man. You will have your own dreams to fulfill without taking on mine. Your existence is enough.
That being said, there are some things about our life that I feel aren’t fair to you. And for those things I’m sorry.
1. I’m sorry I’m in my 40s. I really w…

Until recently, my child was a model sleeper. Went down at roughly 8:00 every night with not so much as a whimper.
Last Saturday we went to a birthday party and then to my mom's for the rest of the weekend. His naps and his bedtime schedule was disrupted. On top of that, I've been on vacation this week, further disrupting his usual routine.
Since Tuesday, Michael has been crying when I put him down to sleep. I have veered between letting him stay up a little longer and letting him cry it out.…

In my last post, I talked about my feelings of connection with my son. About how each day he moves closer to being his own person. During the week or so since writing that, it's been running around in the back of my mind. I'm sure my mother felt this way about me once. And then it dawned on me that I felt that way about her once too.
As a child, as much as our parents see us as being a part of them, we view our parents as extensions of ourselves. A kid has no concept of their parent(s) having a…

Mother love can be a selfish kind of love. Not entirely, but we all know about the selfLESS side of mothering. The sleepless nights, breastfeeding etc. But parts of being a mother are special privileges that are mostly (usually) the domain of the woman, the mother. That's what I was musing on today, the selfISH side of my relationship with my son.
Pregnancy was kind of selfish. I enjoyed the special attention of my partner, my family, his family, our friends and even complete strangers. Long na…

1. Aria felt horrible after her vaccinations. She didnt' cry to eat like she normally does and she didn't want to play. All she wanted was to be held while I patted her back. Dear Declan and Grey,
This is the first of a series of letters I will be writing to you about the experience of being your father.
I am doing this for a couple reasons: First, because being your dad is so stupendously cool, and I don’t want to forget a single poopie diaper. Memory is the clumsy process through which our lives are edited, and I want the never-ending director’s cut.

Today we had one of the most simple yet absolutely delicious family dinner.
I bought some fresh fish at Wholefood - it's important that's it's really fresh - then we just cooked some potatoes in the pressure cooker and whipped up a little "yellow sauce" which is just butter and creme fraiche. The kids absolutely loved it (the sauce clearly helped), and we felt like we ate at one of those French bistros in the heart of Paris.
If your kids have a hard time trying new food, I highly recommend this…
