Health Scoop! How to Eat Healthily While on the Road

When planning a trip, my mouth waters at the thought of the hotel breakfast buffets to come. I’m not sure if it’s the high-fructose corn syrup or breaking my usual diet rules that gives me so much glee. Regardless, by Day 3 of my trip, I’m usually over it and regretting my recently expanded waistline.

That’s why I love foodie and fellow Yummy Mummy Club blogger Theresa Albert’s tips for healthy eating on the road. Here are some of her suggestions:

1. Find a grocery store the moment you reach your destination and purchase mixed greens, low-fat salad dressing, skim milk, orange juice, natural peanut butter, low-fat feta cheese, unsalted nuts, whole grain (low sodium) crackers and some fresh fruit (make sure you include a lemon).

2. Starting the day with a breakfast of fruit, nuts and crackers will help you avoid the crappy coffee and pastries available at every turn.

3. Bookend your day with a huge salad of feta cheese and lemon juice. This way, no matter what sins you committed throughout the day, at least you had a salad.

4. Skip the rice and potatoes and ask for extra steamed veggies. Set the rule that the kids cannot eat anything deep-fried, period. (Obviously, set the example.)

5. Keep crackers and Salba bars in your purse to help you resist bad snacks throughout the day.

6. Make everyone drink water like crazy. Dehydration stresses the body and sends the message of fatigue, which most of us respond to with carbohydrates, and not the good ones. Let the kids put lemon in theirs or go half and half with the OJ.

Hi Catalina, thanks so much for the tips. I'll try those Salba bars you mentioned.
