I only looked away for a few minutes. I had given her crayons and paper to color with while I applied for some jobs. It was about 7 minutes and then it occurred to me that she hadn't come and pulled on me, which she usually does if I am on my computer while she is around; and that it was entirely too quiet, which is never a good sign. I turned around and my jerk response was to call out "oh my God".
My daughter was turning herself into a smurf, from the feet up, with a blue Sharpie. When I caught her, she had randomly marked up her legs, and she had gone back to fill in the holes. Her heel was solid when I stopped her. I guess I startled her because she instantly looked remorseful.
The thing is, I wasn't mad. I started laughing. I couldn't stop laughing. She was so diligent about it. She was so intent on getting it done completely. There was no harm. She needed a bath anyway. Her legs had a blue tint for a few days, but it didn't matter. The picture is adorable. The moment was priceless. I was shown another way my daughter brings more happiness to my life than I could have ever imagined.
Times are tough right now. My husband was laid off last November. I lost my job in July. Our safety net is slowly being used. But in a way, this is the best time of my life. I get to spend more time with my daughter and really see who she is. I might never get this chance again. As stressful as it is, it is also a blessing in disguise. I am reminded of what is important every day of my life.
