Profile Information

About My Family
I feel like what I would say is more boring than the truth of who I am, but here goes. I live in the Pioneer Valley with my husband, baby, and our two cats. We work in insurance, but that's not our passion. I love writing, reading, photography, cooking and food, living in Massachusetts, and introducing our kid to the outdoors.

What are your children's ages and names?
Charlotte is 9 months old at the time of this profile - she was born in September of 2007.
Are you considering having more?
I'd liked to someday.
How would you describe your parenting philosophy?
Before I started reading online communities, I thought I was a pretty liberal parent into attachment parenting. After reading what the Internet thinks is attachment parenting, I realize that I'm a liberal parent who actually studied attachment theory in school and used that as a jumping off point. I don't want to spank my kid, and I'd rather she got used to eating food that tastes like food, not chemicals. I try not to be judgmental about other people's parenting styles - I don't appreciate it when people pick on me, so I'm not gonna pick on them.
What's your favorite parenting book (if any)?
most of them are too stressful.
What are your family’s favorite books and toys?
Charlotte loves "Caps for Sale" and "That's Not My Dinosaur", and her favorite toys are her stuffed tigger and wooden spoons and water bottles.
What are you family’s favorite TV shows or movies?
Charlotte likes baseball and weather, anything with large expanses of color on the screen. Her parents watch lots of Food Network.
What are your family's favorite foods?
anything with siracha, bacon, red meat. salads and cheeses.
What are your family's favorite places to hang out?
Northampton, my sister's house, on our front stoop.
What one adjective would you choose to describe your household?
dad would say chaotic, mom would say happy.
Who are you looking to meet on Ning?
I'll be honest, I want people to read my blog. :) I would love to meet local parents who won't judge me for putting my baby in a playpen, bottle-feeding, and using disposable diapers.

Charlotte's first time on a swing.

homework history

I just read a really good article in Mothering magazine (text not online, too bad) about homework. I know that I'm a few years away from having to worry about Charlotte's homework, but it is something I think about periodically. There are several points to this article, but basically, the gist is that kids today have too much homework, and there is very little scientific evidence that homework is beneficial to kids below the high school level, and quite a bit of evidence to show that it is, actu… Continue

Getting it out of the way...

Hi. On the off chance that anyone decides to read this, I'll just say that I do most of my blogging over on Blogspot, at B is for Baby. That's all my parenty type stuff. For more of me stuff, I blog over at LiveJournal, under (what else) hippygoth. Due to a large amount of crappy life stuff, that is mostly friends-locked, but if you are on LiveJournal and friend me, or leave a comment here, I may very wel… Continue

Actually, all Apgars are related. It's an Ellis Island name; my husband thinks that it was originally Apfelgar. He's very proud to be related to Virginia Apgar, the inventor of the Apgar test. She was a very neat lady!

Hi! I'm also a new mom in Somerville, MA. I know it's not that close, but I feel like we MA Moms should stick together! Your daughter is beautiful, and she looks so happy! I have a little 3 month old boy.

Oh, and we use disposables too, so no judgement. Our lives were just too busy and stressful to seriously consider cloth this time around...
